“BEATS & BREAKS” AT LEGENDARY ARCH SOCIAL CLUB FOR FREE FALL BALTIMORE
BALTIMORE, MD, October 7, 2019 – The famed Arch Social Club at Pennsylvania and North Avenues is celebrating Free Fall Baltimore with “Beats & Breaks: Exploring Maryland’s Diverse Music Traditions” on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 6:30pm.
Music lovers will be treated to an interactive presentation and event celebrating go-go music and Baltimore’s club music—two genres separated by geographical location and local culture, but always in communication with good-natured teasing. Known for its longtime commitment to using its space for civic engagement, as well as for music and entertainment, Arch Social Club is proudly welcoming the public to celebrate these community sounds together.
Baltimore’s own Musicians Paradise Band will provide musical demonstrations in conjunction with the historical contexts, with Torreantoe Smalls and DJ Sincere holding it down for Baltimore club music. Go-Go history and culture will be handled by Kato Hammond, creator of Take Me Out to the Go-Go Magazine and author of the book Take Me Out to the Go-Go (his autobiography), who is quoted in the Musical Crossroads exhibit of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Baltimore community psychologist Tahira Mahdi, also known as media personality Ninety-Nine (“99”), will host the program.
Musicians Paradise Band is one element of TORKO ENT., a one-stop shop for musical entertainment that features various artists and musicians to provide quality entertainment. Hammond and Mahdi are currently curating the TMOTTGoGo Regional Tour of Go-Go History at various museums and other sites in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Take Me Out to the Go-Go Magazine houses a digital museum of Go-Go culture at tmottgogo.com. TMOTTGoGo Inside the Pocket, a 2018 documentary about the magazine’s impact, is now streaming on Amazon.
Tahira Mahdi, Kato Hammond, and Torreantoe Smalls are available for radio, television, print, and digital media interviews. Contact info@tmottgogo.com or 240-416-6622. For more information about “Beats & Breaks”, visit tmottgogo.com/beatsbreaks/.
Free Fall Baltimore is presented by BGE, and is a program of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts, an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
